15 Figuring out Buyer Behavior Part 2

1. I interviewed three people in the college student segment, being students here at the University of Florida.
2. Speaking to college kids, I figured that price would be the biggest factor, and that some may not be willing to pay the few cents extra for better alternatives to plastic and paper straws. The more I talked to them, the more I realized that it did not matter as much, and that quality was a major factor. Style also played a factor to many of the girls I interviewed, with some saying they like the aesthetic idea of how a bamboo straw would look. Price did play a factor with one of the people I interviewed when he originally thought it would cost a lot more, but when I told him that my business idea of being a distributer, it would greatly reduce the price and when bought in bulk only cost a few cents more.
3. For my segment I focused on college students. My business idea would actually be selling to local restaurants not people directly, but I feel that it is important to see if this need exists and interview the clients of these restaurants. Since this is for food the segment, I interviewed buys in person. They do buy online with delivery services such as grub hub and uber eats. I did talk to my friend who works at Outback when he’s home for the summer, and he said he didn’t know who they source their straws.
4. Since my product would be environmentally friendly straw alternatives to traditional plastic and paper straws, the people I interviewed said they would be happy with their purchase if it worked like intended, and didn’t fall apart like paper straws do. Many did say that they would go back to places with these products, which would drive business for the restaurants, which would show that the restaurant would have a positive post purchase evaluation.
5. My first interview was with my friend Lenny. He told me he does not care about how it looks, more for the quality that it would work as intended. He said price was a major concern until finding out it would be only a couple of cents. He said if he could spend money on drinks then he could afford the few cents. The second person I interviewed was my friend Mariela. She told me she really cares about the environment and turtles, but does get annoyed at paper straws. She said that the minimal price difference wouldn’t even be noticed and that something like bamboo straws would look cute on snap chat. The third person I interviewed was my friend Sam. She told me that she doesn’t use straws, but she does once in a while for boba tea and milk shakes. She said she would like the alternative and goes to places more that offer them.
6. I feel that this segment cares about quality and style the most. They do care about price but with such a minimal impact on price the reward is much higher than cost. They do eat out a lot and are very loyal to places they like. This is very important showing that they will go to places with alternative straw solutions. Post purchase evaluation is important because many college students care about reviews and go to places recommended by friends.

  1. Dear Matthew,

I think you did a great job of discovering more about your potential buyer behavior. Because college students are on a budget, I can see why the price would be the most significant factor, and that some may not be willing to pay the few cents extra for better alternatives to plastic and paper straws. I also can see how the quality would be an essential factor.

  2. Hi Matthew,
I think you did a really good job with these interviews. I think it is very important to see what potentially could be your biggest obstacle in the business and that is the market you chose and the fact that they are on a budget.

  3. Hey Matthew, I think you did a really great job with your potential customer choice, the information you got from your interviews were rich, and I think it is also critical to think about what could be a barrier in different aspects of your business. I can definitely relate to the college students that you interviewed, price is a big factor in the decisions we make on purchases due to the lack of income that college students face. I think you have done a great job!
