11A – Idea Napkin No. 1

1. I am a third-year finance major here at the University of Florida. One of my skills I have is I am good at talking to people and always like meeting new people. This will come in handy for my business because I will be able to go around the Gainesville area to different restaurants in order to try and sell better straw alternatives. My aspirations have always been to one day own a company, so for my business idea, I would like to be able to serve all the local Gainesville restaurants, and then maybe one day grow and build to other cities.
2. I am offering a service to distribute better alternatives to paper straws to Gainesville businesses. Here in Gainesville I have talked to many people who are tired of paper straws and how they simply do not work as intended. Putting other alternatives can get expensive, so I am proposing a distribution service that buys these alternatives in big bulk quantities from producers, and can sell them for cheaper prices to local business. Have these better alternatives, such as using bamboo straws, will drive up customer satisfaction and hopefully increase business.
3. I am offering this to restaurants in Gainesville, Florida. After stating here, I would like to move on to the rest of Alachua county, and hopefully other cities in the future with plastic straw bans. My customers will simply come down of business hoping to increase the amount of people in their restaurants, in cities with plastic straw bans.
4. I went to Steak and Shake and ordered a milkshake, and was given a paper straw for it. It lasted like two sips and then it wouldn’t work anymore. Not even that, but it also made my milkshake taste like paper. If a restaurant in Gainesville offered an alternative, then I would definitely choose them over other ones. Choosing to go to places with better alternatives show how it will drive customers to places with alternatives and away form places without.
5. Customers have dissatisfaction when dealing with paper straws. This dissatisfaction could lead to a loss of business, and if other restaurants start to use better alternatives then that could drive customers to the other restaurants. If they don’t join early on, then other customers will go to restaurant that do offer alternatives. I will be able to offer solutions to business, and work one on one with them to insure they are satisfied. They could just order these online, but they will be paying more money because I could offer discounts by buying in bulk and delivering myself from my own warehouse.

I feel that these elements work together. The third element of who I am offering it to is different because for my business idea it is broad, being restaurants in Gainesville, but for other ideas it could be really specific. I do think that the elements fit together in that it identifies a problem, and connects different aspects on how to solve it.

  1. Hi Matthew,
I think you did a great job identifying your individual strengths, the problem and the customers. Being able to talk to strangers and getting their opinions can be really beneficial in starting a business. Restaurants' owners will not only care about the product you are selling them but it you are able to make a connection with them, that could mean more business. One thing I would suggest doing if you have not yet is to look at how much the alternative straws will actually cost. Great post!!

  2. Dear Matthew,

I also feel that these elements can work together, the components fit together in that it identifies a problem, and connects different aspects on how to solve it. I think a distribution service that buys these alternatives in large bulk quantities from producers and can sell them for lower prices to local business is a good business strategy.
